Selfie AI Compared With 50 Dermatologists

1,041 women took selfies. An AI graded seven facial signs and was compared with 50 US dermatologists: strong agreement on five of the seven signs.

Can a selfie taken at home be graded like a clinical photo? A study in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (JEADV) put that to the test with 1,041 women across the United States, of different ages, ancestries and skin types.

An AI graded seven facial signs from each selfie, including forehead lines, wrinkles around the eyes, nasolabial folds and spots. Fifty US dermatologists graded the same images using the same skin atlas.

For five of the seven signs the AI and the dermatologists agreed strongly (correlation of 0.75 or higher), and age and ancestry did not change that. The dermatologists themselves differed from each other by 0.3 to 0.5 grade on the same faces, and in many cases the AI's grading was the more consistent of the two.

Consistency matters for a business: every client gets the same standard of assessment, every time, from the first scan to the follow-up that shows their progress.
